So I haven’t blogged in ages, but loads of people keep asking me about 13 Reasons why, cause I keep going on about how good it is and bigged it up loads! – it’s all over the internet and on my social media loads of people are watching it on Netflix. It’s actually based on a book too. If you plan to watch it, don’t read below cause I’m about to spoil everything for you..
The Series is about a girl named Hannah Baker, She kills herself and records 13 reasons why onto cassette tapes to be handed around to the people that caused her to take her life.
It’s really hard to get in to the series to start with, but I think this was mostly my own fault for being really excited to watch it, as there was a build up about it on Netflix and tumblr etc.
Hannah was best friends with a girl called Cat (Justin’s ex Girlfriend), she moved away so started the new school – Jessica also started at the same time so they became best friends, this turned into a 3 way friendship with a guy named Alex, they drifted apart so she became closer to Clay. Clay worked with Hannah at a Cinema.
Subjects & Reasons are below –
Tape 1 – Side A : Justin Foley, for spreading a racy picture of Hannah along with a sexual rumor about their encounter.
Justin’s mums a drug addict, her boyfriends an alcoholic and he’s really popular as he plays on the basket ball team. He was Hannah’s first kiss.
Tape 1 – Side B : Jessica Davis, for mistakenly believing that Hannah was the reason for her breakup with Alex.
Jess was Hannah’s first friend when she moved to the school, they took Alex in to their friendship group cause he didn’t have any friends either. Alex and Jess became a couple, Hannah got pushed out, Jess blamed Hannah, Slapped her at one point and then yeah.. standard girl drama over a guy basically.. kinda sucks when it’s your first friend though.
Tape 2 – Side A : Alex Standall, for listing Hannah’s ass as the best one of school.
Hannah’s relationships are threatened by a ‘best/worst list’ made by Alex Standall, who has put a “target” on Hannah. This seems such a small thing, maybe even a compliment “best ass”, but this made her a target.
Tape 2 – Side B : Tyler Down, for stalking Hannah and spreading her and Courtney’s kiss photo over the school.
Hannah hears someone outside her window, and confesses to Courtney (they’re friends at this point), that she has a stalker. Courtney offers to help her catch the stalker in the act. While waiting for the stalker to arrive, they play a really drunk game of truth or dare which leads to the two of them making out on Hannah’s bed. Tyler is the school photographer and takes a photo of the girls and sends it around to the school. This ends Courtney and Hannah’s friendship.
Tape 3 – Side A : Courtney Crimsen, for throwing Hannah under the bus to avoid being discovered as one of the people on the kiss photo.
Courtney, afraid of her classmates finding out about her sexuality, (she has no mother and two dads) so spreads the rumour that the girls in the leaked photos are Hannah and Laura, an openly lesbian classmate. Courtney also adds to the rumor about Hannah and Justin, furthering Hannah’s poor reputation.
Tape 3 – Side B : Marcus Cole, for humiliating Hannah in public on their One Dollar Valentine’s date.
Hannah’s date on Valentine’s Day with Marcus doesn’t go as planned due to the rumors that she’s ‘easy’. She waits for Marcus in a cafe for over an hour, he comes with his friend and is forceful on her. She screams, he eventually gets off and Zach sits with her and attempts to make it feel slightly better.
Tape 4 – Side A : Zach Dempsey, for stealing the “positive notes” destined to Hannah in Communications class out of revenge for her dissing him.
After Hannah refuses to go out with Zach, he targets her emotionally during a class task. Theres paper bags hanging in the class room for people to put compliments and comments in to each other (nice ones obvs). Zach takes all of Hannah’s over a few weeks.
Tape 4 – Side B : Ryan Shaver, for stealing a poem she wrote noting her personal problems and publishing it in the school newspaper without her consent.
Hannah decides to get into poetry to keep her mind off stuff. Ryan Shaver is also into poetry and Hannah pours her heart out after encouragement from him. Ryan then betrays her by publishing the poem against her will in his school magazine.
Tape 5 – Side A : Justin Foley, for allowing Bryce to rape his girlfriend Jessica.
While hiding in Jess’ room during a summer party, Hannah watches Bryce raping an unconscious and drunk Jessica, with Justin’s consent. She Freezes and is already scared of Bryce, so doesn’t stop it. When it’s over she puts Jess to bed.
Tape 5 – Side B : Sheri, for abandoning Hannah after she crashed her car into a stop sign, which later caused the death of another student.
After the party, Hannah gets a lift home from Sheri. They get into an accident and hit a ‘Stop’ sign, but Sheri refuses to call the police. While Hannah is on her way to find a phone, an accident happens at that same place. This causes the death of Jeff Atkins, a friend of Clay’s.
When Hannah tries to tell Clay about the ‘Stop’ sign he pushes her away thinking it’s one of her drama moments again.
Tape 6 – Side A : Clay Jensen, for leaving Hannah even when she told him to (you never leave a girl alone when she says leave me alone, don’t all guys know this?) , after they shared a kiss. However, Hannah notes that Clay does not deserve to be on the tapes (she confesses her love for him) but it was necessary to add him to the reasons because he was important to what happened and she wanted him to know why and how he wasn’t there.
Clay finally listens to his tape and is overcome with guilt because he could not do enough to prevent her suicide.
Tape 6 – Side B : Bryce Walker, for raping Hannah in his hot tub.
After leaving money in the unlocked car and losing her parent’s deposits which were supposed to go to the bank, a depressed Hannah stumbles upon a party thrown by Bryce. The night ends in tragedy when she ends up alone with him and he rapes her. (In the present, Clay goes to Bryce’s house on the pretext of buying weed from him and confronts Bryce about the rape, taping his confession, trying to get justice for Hannah.)
Tape 7 – Side A : Mr. Porter, for not believing Hannah was suicidal and for blaming her for her being raped.
Clay gives Tony the confession tape to copy. Hannah, with only one tape left, decides to give life one more chance and begs for help. She visits Mr. Porter, who works at the school as a guidance counsellor. She tells him about her rape, without admitting who was the responsible. Mr. Porter basically says that she has no chances of being taken seriously and insists that she continues with her life as if it never happened.
Hannah records the conversation, which will become the side A of tape 7.
She gets her things sorted out, goes home, and commits suicide (we won’t go into detail how but you see pretty much everything. She is later found by her mother.
While this is happening, it goes to the present. Clay confronts Mr. Porter about the incident and gives him the tapes with the side B of tape 7 being Bryce’s rape confession.
Meanwhile, Tony, who at first promised to keep Hannah’s wishes, decides to give her parents a USB stick of copies of the tapes on. All those named as complicit in Hannah’s death confess their faults except Alex, who tries to commit suicide by shooting himself in the head (or does he.. we don’t actually know he shot himself yet, its just whats said but Tyler actually takes a gun to school It’s all really confusing in this episode cause theres so much going on!). He is in critical condition and it is unknown if he survives.
Justin leaves his home and town out of guilt for not telling Jessica the truth about Bryce straight away.
Clay is shown reaching out to Skye, a classmate whom he noticed with scars on her wrists in an earlier episode. He is last seen with her, as well as with Tony and his boyfriend.
While all this is happening theres a massive law suit going on with the school. Clays mum is representing the school and then stops when she releases how close Clay and Hannah were, She puts her son first.
Towards the end of the episode, Clay goes to visit Mr. Porter. Clay has the Conversation with him about how and who could have stopped Hannah’s death. And Mr Porter is emotional.. “You can’t love someone back to life.”
So even if you haven’t watched it and I’ve completely spoilt it for you, i’ve actually left all the stuff in the present time out – which is actually A LOT. It’s definitely one to watch and shows how bullying someone no matter how small it may be, can actually make someone feel that low..
So basically, it really makes you think about stuff. It’s a really good watch on Netflix, It’s massively emotional, will repeatedly break your heart, make you hate certain people, you’ll cry a lot, but it’s honestly well worth the watch!
It’s easy to not be a total arsewipe, think before you speak / act.
