What 2018 Taught Me.

So! I’ve been here there and every everywhere in the last few months of 2018. I was changing jobs, building a hair and make-up studio, finally seeing my friends more and traveling at every opportunity I had (New York blog post coming soon).
I started a Vlog, My own business and got the all clear from a tumour on my Thyroid gland.

They’ll also be loads more blog posts this year – purely because i actually have the time now.

Although this all sounds positive, I learnt A LOT in 2018 and some of it is negative.

One of my best friends Beth has just started a blog herself and I couldn’t be more proud of her ( http://simplybeth99home.wordpress.com ) go take a look at her blog, her first blog is where i got the idea for this blog post from – and on a totally unbiased basis – she’s honestly amazing.

But yeah, sidetracking again – here’s 10 things 2018 taught me.

1. “Dear You, busy, weary, tired you. Please know that the world won’t stop spinning if you take a break.. It’s about finding a balance, a bit of give and take.
You can’t move mountains every day, some days are just a little grey.
So, this is your reminder.. You can’t do it all – Please take a step back before you fall.”

After it taking so long to diagnose me with *graves disease* I spent my summer pretty down so chucked myself into my blog, numerous different jobs and work, purely to keep myself busy. I learnt slowly (and the hard way) that graves disease isn’t a joke – if I say i need a rest, it’s because I need a rest. If i admit i’m tired – I need to sleep.
– It’s okay to take a time out if you need it. Despite what anyone else says or how anyone else makes you feel.

*Graves Disease* – Hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid, is a condition in  which an excessive amount of thyroid hormones are produced by the thyroid gland. A common cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves Disease, another problem that cannot be cured. If graves disease is not treated it can be fatal.

2. “2018 has taught me that you can’t control someones loyalty. No matter how good you are to them, doesn’t mean they’ll treat you the same. No matter how much they mean to you, doesn’t mean they’ll value you the same. Sometimes the people you love the most, turn out to be the people you can trust the least.”

And ain’t that the truth! – Someone can make out they’re all about you until they no longer need you – and that’s when true colours come out. I learnt this the hard way and i’d love to say i’ve learnt my lesson but i’m a very gullible human being..

3. You WILL Compare yourself to others on social media.

I may not be the skinniest, I may not be the most tanned, or have the best skin or be the best looking – But thats okay.

4. Work can’t always come first.

It’s so easy to get into a routine of work, home, work, bed. It gets to a point where you can so easily forget to eat and have a life outside of work, and thats exactly what happened to me.
Now I have my studio and i’m working 1 night a week and it’s so much less pressure & i get to see my friends and family so much more.

5. Stay away from negative people.

It’s a lot easier said than done. But if someones bitching about someone to you, then what are they saying about you to them? There’s only so much negativity you can take before you turn into a negative person yourself – No one needs that, and nothing is worth that – No matter how much you love something.

6. For god sake girl, EAT!

Getting over the same eating disorder yet again was another positive thing of 2018. I totally lost myself as it was the only thing I had control over.
Eating is SO important along with having a balanced diet – without that you can feel so down and drained. Eat some veg, drink some water and eat a chocolate bar bigger than your head. Take the stairs instead of the lift and just be happy – enjoy it.

7. Your true friends will ALWAYS have your back, no matter where you are or how long its been since you last saw them.

You need friends that will defend you in a room when someone speaks bad about you, without you being there. You need friends that are more like family. You don’t need to see these friends a lot, but you know if you need them – they’re there.

8. Even the most confident of people need help sometimes.

Put me in a club, in front of 2000 people and I can cope, put me one to one with someone and the panic hits. I come across to some people as one of the most confident people you could meet – but i’m also one of the most anxious people you could ever meet. Never judge a book by its cover..

9. It’s OKAY to ask for help.

If you’re struggling or need help with something, or if you just need a push in the right direction, it’s always okay to ask for help. Even if the person you need help from is the busiest person on the planet – if they’re a half decent human being, they’ll always find time for you. People you have known 5 minutes can be more loyal than people you’ve known for years.

10. I am so much stronger than I have ever given myself credit for.

2018 helped me grow, 2019 is my year…With A LOT more pizza.

On Your Door Step This Autumn.

IMG_5802 2
After a few really busy weeks, i’ve literally had no life at all, so this weekend was the first weekend where I could do something other than sleep. Autumn is my absolute favourite, so heres some ideas of things you can do this Autumn around Leicestershire.

Cattows Farm & Tea Room – Pumpkin Picking.

I went yesterday and didn’t know what to expect really but I was really surprised. I took my niece and nephew and we had a great time. Theres no cost for parking or seeing the animals. The only thing you pay for there is the pumpkins that you take home and a hot drink or food from the tea room which is really reasonably priced and had many gluten free options.

When you arrive theres face painting, many decorations to take photos with, countless pre picked pumpkins and loads more. As you walk down theres huge mountains of hay to climb (my niece and nephew loved this) plus tractors, cars and other toys to ride on. Theres also inflatable slides and rides in the field next to the pumpkins.

As you walk down they’ve decorated the farm amazingly for halloween. I had to convince my niece the grave stones weren’t actually real! Then as you walk in to the next field (the pumpkin patch) there is more pumpkins then you can ever imagine! All I kept being told was “This is so much better than Morrisons!” .. Which is defiantly a compliment! I’m just a little gutted i hadn’t taken them properly before now, theres so much to do and animals to see too and you can easily spend hours there! The entire day cost us £3.08 cause we took a pack up with us.

Diwali Light Switch On – Belgrave Road, Leicester, Sunday 28th October.

The Diwali celebrations in Leicester are HUGE every year and are some of the best in the UK. The festivities are based on Belgrave Road but spread all over the city.

The Diwali light switch on brings ‘The Golden Mile” in Leicester alive with thousands of lights and an entire ray of different colours.

The event takes place from 5:30pm until 9pm and the event is Free.

Bradgate Park.

Bradgate park is open all year round but it’s my favourite in the Autumn when the leaves are on the floor and you get freezing feet walking through the river in your wellies.
Theres so many different routes to take in Bradgate park, photo opportunities and just loads to see.

Outside the park theres numerous tea rooms too but we usually get hot chocolate from the tea room inside the park half way down the park road. It comes with cream and marshmallows so it’s always a hit for little people that are usually with me!

Parking in the park is around £3 but there is also on street parking.

New Walk Museum.

New Walk Museum is again, open all year around, but it’s amazing when you need something cheap and different to do on a cold or wet day. Theres different rooms full of different projects. These vary from Ancient Egypt, Dinosaurs with full size skeletons and fossils to under the sea. We love it here as it’s really easy to get to and the walk from Vicky Park (where you can park for £3 for 3 hours) to the museum itself is really pretty and theres loads of different things to look at.

Theres no entry cost into the Museum itself, but they ask for a donation.

Thornton Reservoir.

Thornton Reservoir is literally on my doorstep with it being less than 2 miles away from me. The reservoir is one of the most peaceful places I know. It offers a network of trails and footpaths around the reservoir and through the neighbouring woodland areas. There are also links with longer trails including the Leicester round and various other footpaths.
You can either go the muddy way (we love wellies so this is what we do) or stick to the paths to get yourself around the reservoir.
The reservoir is opposite a garden centre which has one of the cutest coffee shops i’ve ever been too.

Parking is free, and theres no entry fee.

Alpaca Park Farm

The Alpaca Park Farm is an animal park. It has animals that include pygmy and angora goats, donkeys, pigs, loads of chickens and of course Alpacas! You can feed the animals there too!

They serve breakfast from 10am and have a huge selection of Gluten free Cakes too.. plus, did i mention you get to pet an Alpaca?

It’s free entry, they just ask for a donation.

Give them ago, there all cheap and easy to do for under £5!
Let me know what you think, I’m all for a netflix and chill kinda day, but sometimes you NEED to get out of the house!

Schar Melto’s & Temptie’s – Worth the hype and the price?

So, as soon as you look on any gluten free blog or page, we’re all hyping about the Brand New Schar “Melto’s” and “Temptie’s”.

After messaging Schar repeatedly on twitter to see where they were in stock etc (and not going to lie, actually being kind of disappointed with the customer service I received on this..) Me and my mum decided after 3 weeks of trying to find the products we’d give up.

I went to work, she went shopping and boom, she find’s the products – eventually!

So, theres 2 products amongst other brand new ones, which include the chocolate dip pot  and the wafers too.

The first thing I tried was the “Temptie’s”. I’m unsure what i expected but they were really nice! Full of flavour, with a nice texture. But at a price of £2.50 minimum per box (you get 3 in a box) These seemed really expensive. They’re nice, but definitely nice as a treat and not an every week kind of thing.

Secondly I tried the Melto’s. These are AMAZING and I honestly can’t recommend them more. They’re full of cream and filling, and although the packet looks small, you actually get a lot of chocolate inside the packet. I could live off of these forever and be more than happy! These are £1 a bar, which may seem expensive but they’re honestly really worth it and you won’t regret buying them.

I got my family to try one of the Melto’s too and they said that they were nicer than the gluten filled “Kinder Bueno”.

Both the Melto’s and Temptie’s you can get from Asda and the Melto’s you can also get from Morrisons too!

Give them a try, and let me know what you think!

Where have I been, What am I doing?!

So, as you can tell, i’ve been off here for a while and not as consistent with my instagram posts too. I’ve been so crazy busy, had some issues with illness and also some issues with WordPress and themes etc.

I’m back and i’ll try that little bit harder, but heres what i’ve been doing this Summer so far..

At the start of the summer I went to Spain (blog post already posted, take a look!). Spain was good, it was hot, but it was STRESSFUL. The resort we stayed in what absolutely awful for gluten free and just in general.. I stayed there for a week and didn’t even have a bed to sleep in.. i was sleeping on sofa cushions for a week with a bottom sheet over me.. it was the absolute worse!

Paris was well and truly a nightmare and i’m still waiting for http://www.booking.com to sort it out. They seemed really helpful whilst we were there but not so much now we’re back. Still waiting for refunds and honestly – an apology.

Here’s the text I wrote with my caption on one of my insta posts – (@basicbee)

“I wouldn’t usually use this to rant but I need to warn people about a hotel that we booked through @bookingcom (not their fault at all!) – – – We just landed in Paris for our stress free mini break… Got here got in a taxi that locked us in and tried to take £150 euros from us (for a 15 minute journey). Got an Uber after 40 mins, got to the hotel paid £40 for Uber, the hotel didn’t have anyone at reception they put us in a room that was the size of a store room, didn’t have a bathroom, and a dirty sink that didn’t work, and had a bed smaller bed for both of us, no one at reception (they don’t man it so we had no one to help us feel remotely safe) so can’t get a refund for the £80, people smoking in there, doing drugs, trying to block us walking, shouting things at us, trying to get in our room, no lock on the door of the room – then we left, found another hotel which is £163 that’s the cheapest we could find.. paid another £35 in a taxi to get back here which is next to the airport, just got here, the reception are lovely, he said he didn’t have the same room for both nights for us, so we’d have to change room we said it’s fine, he went to do details and said don’t worry go to bed you look tired and stressed, he then upgraded us to a suite with that sleeps 5/6 people for the same price.. told us all about free buses to get us to places.. then rang up the room were in to check we’re okay.. and to tell us he’s moved everyone around so we can be in the same room for both nights were here.. He really is our super hero right now! It’s finally bed time, and it’s time to eat biscuits and sleep before our 7am alarm! Tomorrow (well today!) is a new day right?! 🙈😭”

The next day we went to Disney Land and actually had a really good time!

Now we’re back, thinking about it more, it is slightly booking.com’s fault. They shouldn’t have listed the hotel as a hotel when its a hostel AND they should make sure their guests are safe.. But anyway! Moving on..

It’s pretty common knowledge that I LOVE North Wales. It’s one of my favourite places in the entire world, if not my favourite.  It’s so chilled, not stressful, gluten free options are everywhere and i can dress in whatever i feel comfortable in, without feeling like i’m being judged. Theres always loads of driving in wales too, but I drive there which means i have my car, so theres no waiting around for trains or buses etc. It’s also SO pretty!
We alway stay at a place called Ogwyn Bank, and it’s honestly just so pretty. Theres so many beaches, mountains and just everything and anything you could want.

The Browns Wedding:
My friend Susie got married to her partner Adam a few weeks ago. I did her hair and her bridesmaids hair and also her makeup. It was such a good evening, and the venue was SO pretty.

Colchester – Essex:
I went down to Colchester to see my friends. I saw Jade, Aeysha, Mem, Roger, Charlotte and Rachael. It was a good weekend and I got to BBQ on a beach type place that also had sand.. it was so CUTE though! I made sweet chilli and lime prawns, they were good!

Some of the guys i hadn’t met before, so it was SO good finally meeting them again! I’m going back down next weekend too!

House, Home and Moving:
Dan and I started buying a few bits for when we move out. We got glasses, cups, tea towels and a few other bits. We thought it would be better to start buying now then bulk buy when we move in. This way we don’t skint ourselves. We’ve worked out where we want to live now and I can’t wait to move out at the start of next year with him!

Anniversary Weekend:
At the end of August it’s 2 years since Dan and I went on our first date. He told me we could do whatever I wanted so we booked some bits! Then it turns out he needs to go and watch the football on the Saturday… SO! We’ve had to move things around and now we’re off to try “Ghetto Golf” in Birmingham. I’m actually really happy about this because i’ve wanted to try it for a while.

This Weekend:
This weekend my friend Jade is coming up from Colchester. We have SO much planned which obviously includes binge watching Greys Anatomy, letting me cook too much food and going on an adventure on Saturday.

Sunday, we’re going for breakfast and then she’s leaving me to go back home. Then i’m seeing Dan for a few hours and we’re going for afternoon (well, evening) tea!

And thats about it!
I had some amazing cookies from @Thenuttybrunchco to try last weekend, i’ll let you know how they were on my next post!

You need a Pizza’ This! – Gluten Free Chicken & Pesto Pizza

So Hey!
I’m back & I’m playing catch up with recipes as i’ve cooked and baked a fair amount over the last month or so!

In the UK, we never really get a Summer but we’re currently on week 3 of nice weather. I put the poutine and gravy away for once & I made pizza’s instead; and they worked really well!

For the base:

  • 2 teaspoons dried active baking yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon brown soft sugar
  • 350ml warm water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 430g plain flour (I use the co-ops one Free from flour and it works amazingly)

  • Tomato and basil sauce (Literally just Chopped tomatoes, blended with basil, parsley, a small amount of garlic, salt and pepper.
  • Roasted chicken breast
  • Green Pesto – You can buy this or use the recipe that I use (linked in blog on main page from Wednesday)
  • Mozzarella Cheese (Fresh is always the best as you can pull it apart but grated works too!)

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast and brown sugar in the warm water, and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  2. Stir the salt and oil into the yeast mixture, then Mix in half of the flour.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a clean, well floured surface, and knead in more flour until the dough is no longer sticky. Place the dough into a well oiled bowl, and cover with a damp cloth (i used a tea towel and it worked fine!) . Let the dough rise until double in size; this should take about 1 hour. Punch down the dough, and form a tight ball. Allow the dough to relax for a minute before rolling out.
  4. Add your toppings – *Full list of my toppings above –
  5. Preheat oven to 220 C / Gas mark 7.  If you are baking your pizza in a tray, lightly oil the pan, and let the dough rise for 15 or 20 minutes before topping and baking it.
  6. Bake pizza in preheated oven, until the cheese and crust are golden brown, about 15 to 20 minutes.

Leave to cool for a few minutes, cut and serve.

I had mine with a leafy salad, beetroot salad and homemade coleslaw – IMG_6476

Let me know how you get on –

Am I Invisible? Nah, that’s just my illness..

Am I invisible?
Nah, that’s just my illness..

“Definition of invisible. plural invisibles. : an invisible person or thing : someone or something that cannot be seen or perceived.”

I’ve been around but not around at the same time. I’m massively behind with my blog too! So here’s a little update on where i’ve been..

and SHOCK, it’s all down to my abnormal immune system..

For the last 12 months i’ve felt ill on and off, but explaining it was near enough impossible. I went to and from the doctors and GP and was always told i just had low iron levels and that i was anaemic.

About 16 weeks ago enough was enough and there i was, back at the doctors surgery, refusing to see anyone but Dr T. He’s in charge of the entire surgery. My theory was, if he couldn’t work out what was wrong with me, thats it, it was all in my head after all and really it IS just low iron and i’d just need some stronger iron tablets.

My appointment was already 25 minutes late, so in that 25 minutes i was just doubting myself over and over again and worrying if i was wasting the NHS’ time.. Yet deep down I KNEW there was something wrong.. but i couldn’t understand why nobody would listen, or help me.

I got to the point where unless i was with Dan, or going to 2 of the venues we work with, or to work I couldn’t leave the house. I was repeatedly seeking approval on how i looked, if i could leave the house like this, sending photos of outfits to people, or asking my mum repeatedly before i left the house. It got to the point that I knew every single weekend that Dan came to see me, I wouldn’t be 100%, i’d plan stuff and get SO excited to do it, but when it came down to it, I just felt too out of it. I also got to the point where I truly believed he’d be better without me and the anxiety of that was over whelming..

As soon as i was in the car, I was fine but the nervousness, anxiety and irritability was way too much. I was SO tired, yet couldn’t sleep. My legs would go dead, my heart would race and I was just constantly weak.. Yet put me into work, watch me at work and i was fine. I could be around 1000+ people at a time – I just couldn’t be with 2/3, the nerves took over.

When I woke up in the mornings, I wouldn’t have fallen asleep till 5/6am, work or not yet i’d be waking up before my alarm at 8am instead of 9am / 10am.

Was I just over tired? Dehydrated?
Every time I put on some weight and began to look normal, i’d lose it the week after. It wouldn’t be a small amount either, it would be a stone off and off, week by week. I knew this wasn’t healthy… but I was at my wits end.

Finally, it was my appointment time, I went into the GP room and I broke down to the GP, convinced I was crazy. He gave me endless tissues, told me his room was always open and booked me in for blood tests the very next day.

I had my blood tests, they took what I thought was a lot of blood, and I passed out.

I woke up, went to work and pretended everything was normal.

The following day, at 9am I got a phone call back from my Dr and was asked to come to the GP surgery. I hadn’t got in from work until 3am, didn’t sleep till 7 and I was told I wouldn’t get results for a week. Yet, here i am, walking to an emergency appointment the day after, less than 24 hours after..

As I arrived the doctor was there to meet me and we walked straight into his room. He started listing off symptoms and I was verbally ticking them off.. Everything seemed like it was starting to make sense :

  • nervousness, anxiety and irritability.
  • mood swings.
  • difficulty sleeping.
  • persistent tiredness and weakness.
  • sensitivity to heat.
  • swelling in your neck from an enlarged thyroid gland (goitrte)
  • an irregular and/or unusually fast heart rate (palpitations)

Finally – he knew what was wrong with me and again (shock) I broke down in tears. It turns out i wasn’t losing my mind, i wasn’t crazy, there has been something wrong with me!

He diagnosed me with a VERY Over Active Thyroid. He was shocked it had been left this long and tests weren’t done before. He’d also tested my liver levels to check which medication I was okay with. He gave me a prescription and off I went..

He’d booked me into various appoints at the Leicester Royal Infirmary in the Endocrinology department.

Sounding good right?

So far we’re around 3 months in of medication – my medication is being added too every other week and the MG’s i’m on is going up and up..

I’m currently meant to be finally in my appointment next Friday, then we’ll talk about Radiotherapy and Graves disease – I’m crossing my fingers this appointment doesn’t get cancelled too..

I guess the moral of this post is to say, YOU know your body and YOU know when you’re not feeling right. So listen to yourself and push, push, push as much as you can, until you finally get an answer.

I’ve got half my answer and i’m still waiting – I guess i’m happy to know it wasn’t all in my head though.

This isn’t a dig at the NHS either, they’re amazing and they do amazing things, just sometimes things clearly get missed.

Now i’m ready to plan summer with my favourite humans and puppy dog and make the most of it.

Invisible illness’ are just as important as visible ones.. Sometimes they’re just harder to explain..

Madame Waffle – Lincoln

Hey! SO! Something a little different –

If you’re looking for something different I couldn’t recommend Madame Waffle more! They gluten free options are amazing!

“Freshly made sweet and homecooked savoury toppings served on individually, freshed cooked to order crisp Belgian waffles. We even offer our waffles in plain, wholemeal and gluten free options.

With three floors to explore – street level, underground and dining room.

Pull up a chair, relax and enjoy!”

And their website couldn’t be more correct! They are AMAZING!

I ordered two! (But i ate one before I took a photo – Ooops!) So my brother saved the day and sent me his photo, so you can get a rough idea!

The first one I ordered was called “The Pricilla” it was Waffle, Peanut Butter, Bacon, Banana and Maple Syrup. It was such a mixture – but it was AMAZING!

The second one I had was the “Fresh Fruit” waffle. This was nice too, but the calories in the first one made it ten times better! (see above)

Here is the MENU –

We’re due to go back in a couple of weeks and I honestly can’t wait, I don’t think i’ve ever been so excited over Waffles before in my life!

Like I said above, I fully recommend you check it out!

“Frankie And Benny’s do a great Gluten Free Menu!” Said no one, ever…

Hey! So now i’m back to blogging a little more, I can tell you about our experience on Sunday night! We went to Frankie and Benny’s and it was.. well, take a read.

On Sunday night Dan and I wanted to go out for dinner. As usual we did the whole where do you want to eat, where do i want to eat etc. Somehow we ended up between Chiqutos and Frankie and Benny’s. After flipping a coin 5 times we went to Frankie and Benny’s.

Once we got there the menu actually looked pretty good! There was starters, quite a few different mains and desserts too!

I had bacon, cheese and bbq sauce potato skins to start. They missed the BBQ sauce but I had sour cream (my all time fave) so I wasn’t bothered and more than happy.

For our mains, Dan ordered a Spaghetti Bolognese and I ordered a Carbonara.

When the food came out, his looked great, but mine didn’t look amazing. Either way, it’s carbonara which is one of my “Go To” meals if I eat out at an Italian.

I bit into the pasta and it was SOLID. It literally crushed and fell apart in my mouth.. Dan tried a bit too, to make sure it wasn’t just one bad piece.

It was cold, solid, and AWFUL!

We were super polite and sent it back – then he manager came over..

As the manager got to the table, instead of telling us he’d make a fresh one, or even cook it for a little longer…

He decided to tell us it wasn’t made here. We were both pretty puzzled.. Until he explained that the gluten free food was “Pre Cooked” before it got to the restaurant and microwaved.. his exact words!

SO hold up a minute, i’m paying £9.99 for a microwave meal (with no sauce)?! How can they possibly justify that?!

IT’S PASTA – you just boil it! My Italian Grandmother would be going absolutely crazy right now if she heard this..

So yeah, long story short, he told us that it was pre cooked before it arrive, no wonder it was pretty gross!

I posted in a GF group on facebook about it and they recommended a burger – it’s safe to say we won’t be going back any time soon though!

If i wanted a microwave meal, i’d nip to Morrisons and eat it in front of the TV in my PJ’s!

I am currently a very bored Bees when it comes to eating out.

Have you got any good ideas, or found any amazing places?

Let me know!

New York Baby!

I’ve not been around and blogging much lately, i’ve been super busy (but thats another post..) So here i am… thinking about Christmas already!

I was totally and utterly lost last Christmas as I just didn’t know what to get for Dan and it ended up being a trip to Barcelona, joint with his birthday present and then a few other little bits.

Buying for someone that literally has everything is the absolute worse because there isn’t anything new or exciting. Dan and I have gone to Paris twice, Madrid, Rome and Barcelona in the last 19 months and each time we’ve gone, it’s purely to find new things and to literally go on an adventure!

Rome will always be my favourite, although I say this, but i can think of loads of amazing things from each place!

For some reason (which i’m more than happy about) it’s now a “Thing” that we go away as his Birthday / Christmas present and i’m totally okay with that.. apart from the fact that i feel like i need to make it absolutely amazing each and every time!

So yeah, back to the point of this.. I was sitting in bed on night off from work and decided that I wanted to book something for his Birthday / Christmas but tell him, so we both had time to save so we could do everything and anything we want to do..

I’d dropped hints about New York and he kept saying “Yeah one day, one day i’d love to go with you…”

So, me being me and being the very extra person that I am, didn’t really listen to the whole “one day” part and jumped straight on the internet.

After looking for 4 days, at any and every opportunity I could and asking various people when to go, what do do etc… We’re going to NEW YORK at Christmas for 4 days.

I told Dan i’d booked us a surprise but said I wasn’t going to tell him what it was until his birthday (November).. An hour later i was bugging him to ring me so i could tell him.. My whole surprise thing lasted a solid hour and a half max.. Oooops!

So, heres my question; Other than obviously pretending that we’re in “Home Alone” and doing the usual New York bits at Christmas, where would YOU go and why? After flying all that way i’d hate to miss something! – So let me know!

Travel – Barcelona

Back in my little corner of the internet for my first new blog post of 2018!

We had such a busy Christmas, traveling here there and everywhere to see the family, but for Dan’s birthday and Christmas present I only got him a few silly little bits – because for his main present, I bought us a little city break and we had a couple of days in Barcelona. He’d been before but all he did was sit on a beach, so it was time for us to explore!

We woke up on the 27th and left my house (in the snow) at 4:45/5am – I was SHATTERED – Yet some how still managed a full face of makeup, as I knew as soon as we got there, we’d be exploring.

We landed around 1pm, got a Taxi to the hotel, got changed quickly and went exploring straight away. We got a taxi into the city centre as we wanted to make the most of our time there, so figured we’d sort out and work out the Metro on the way back, when we were no longer in a rush. IMG_3886

Our hotel was super cute. We stayed in a Spa hotel, yet didn’t actually use any of the spa, or even set foot in it because we were just too busy and the opening times of the actual spa itself clashed with everything we’d planned to do. IMG_3887IMG_3888

As we got into Barcelona city centre, Dan spotted my favourite shop before I did. Sarah told me there was a slide to get in, so of course, i needed to have ago.

The side was actually really fast, and I made Dan go down it first, I needed my instagram photographer at the bottom before me, or who else would i get to take the photos!?

I love, love, LOVE, Sephora.

But I stand by what i’ve always said – it needs an ABH counter. In my opinion it’s literally all thats missing.

We left with my Valentines day present – which i’m annoyingly not allowed until February. I can’t really moan though, i mean we did go to Barcelona for Dan’s birthday / Christmas present in the first place, after all! IMG_3899

I really like graffiti, like actual nice pictures etc, not the rubbish random letters done with spray paint that aren’t actually meant to be anything. I loved looking in the graffiti tunnel in London, and there was quite a lot around Barcelona. Dan hates graffiti, so every time I take a photo of any, he makes comments about any slight smudge of the wrong colour on any brick or paint work for the next week, purely to prove his point.

After exploring and looking around we found a little cafe to get some food, so of course we’re in spain, so we ordered Paella. IMG_3901

The place itself was super cute, it wasn’t very warm though, I was freezing whilst everyone else as sitting in T-shirts more than happy.IMG_3903

We ordered Olives to start, but they came with gherkins and onions, so i was in my element. I just stunk for a while after.IMG_3918

When the Paella came it was MASSIVE. Dan’s convinced it was only for 2 people, but i’m pretty sure 4 people could have eaten it and been more than happy. IMG_3926

Wherever we went to eat we kept being offered bread, and Dan kept declining it which was nice, look at him thinking about me and my non bread diet. IMG_3933

I got super excited about the Christmas lights so wanted to photo with them – turns out that the photo we actually took with them – they flashed off. Absolutely gutted, i promise they were cute!

I took a photo of these crisps just because they were Barcelona crisps and it made me kinda chuffed..

On our way back we went to La Rambla.

La Rambla is a street in the centre of Barcelona. It’s lined with trees and a mall. It stretches for around 1.2 kilometres connecting in the centre with the Christopher Columbus monument at Port Vell. It’s full of pavement cafe’s and souvenir kiosks.

It’s honestly amazing, you just need to be really careful as theres a lot of pick pockets around. Luckily we had our things in my bag which i wore round my front.

This may seem like nothing, and I can’t eat it because it’s full of Gluten anyway. But look! A bucket full of McDonalds Chicken Nuggets and Cheese bites! My Niece and Nephew would be in heaven with this! IMG_3936

The following day we woke up early as Tom and Alex had got us tickets to a tour of Camp Nou.

We left the hotel and followed google maps for all of 20 seconds, before we realised you could literally see it from out hotel.. Safe to say we took a slow walk down and managed to not get lost! IMG_3955

We got there and there was loads to see, and we found out that Dan’s not so short after all! .. Well, I mean, he’s slightly taller than Messi so? IMG_3957

There was SO much to look at.IMG_3958

Dan had an amazing time, even if i did make him take 400 photos… IMG_3978

By the end of the tour he said he was “All photo’d out” and we were really hungry so we took a walk and found somewhere to eat, and ordered some Tapas. IMG_4026

Our eyes were clearly too big for our bellies, we ordered Patatas Bravas, Garlic Prawns (which Dan liked because they were already half peeled..)

Squid, Chorizo Sausage,IMG_4029

And a plate of Meat and Cheese. IMG_4030

We were SO FULL! We jumped on the Metro (We found some train tickets that were like 14.50 euros, that covered us for unlimited travel for 48 hours – so these were perfect for us.

We ended up back at La Rambla, because we really wanted to see it properly, in the day time. IMG_4032

As soon as we got into the market area it was UNREAL. This isn’t even 1/4 of the first  chocolate stand. IMG_4044

Marzipan fruits, and fruit jellies, IMG_4045

Look at how many jelly sweets there are! AND the fried eggs were bigger than my hands! IMG_4046

Fish, and nuts, fruit, chips, pizza, crisps, whatever you can think of, it was there. IMG_4047

I got some chocolate covered strawberries that were 1 euro ( i think ) they were so yummy, and gluten free too! IMG_4052

Here you decide what you want to eat, and they cook it for you there and then. IMG_4058

More chocolate… i was legit in heaven. IMG_4060

They had truffles that were genuinely bigger than my hand..IMG_4064

We walked out the other side of the market and walked around. I really wanted to see some of the Gaudi buildings around Barcelona, but as we were there for such a short time, I came to terms with the fact we weren’t going to have time, so we’d need to come back to see them. IMG_4075

Until I found some really cute and interesting looking stained glass windows and was staring at them for ages, i’m pretty sure Dan got bored of this, so we walked around the other side of the building to the front… Andddd it turns out we were already at one of The Gaudi Museums.. IMG_4080

After this we decided to head towards the Metro.. and of course do a little more shopping, so Dan being Dan, and knowing how much I love Sephora ( I had walked around the football stadium with him for hours the same day ) said we could go back to Sephora. I won a hair treatment but have beauty works hair in the front of my head, so figured that was a no. They swapped it for a mini make over for me, so I queued up to get my mini make over, took one look at the state of her pallet and decided that was definitely going to be a no.. IMG_4085

We walked some more, it got cold and we some how got peckish, so we stopped at Planet Hollywood in Barcelona. I had a Mocktail (non alcoholic cocktail) with orange juice, mango juice and red bull, it was SO nice but super sweet! IMG_4119

The gluten free options were amazing, but we knew they’d be good because of when we went to the Planet Hollywood at Disneyland Paris. IMG_4120

We ordered Nachos “For 2 to share” but they came out and they were absolutely HUGE! We definitely didn’t need mains.. IMG_4122

So we went straight to dessert! It was SO good! This was a chocolate brownie sundae, but the brownie was gluten free. It was so yummy and warm.

Warm brownie with ice cream is something I really miss from when i was able to eat normal food. IMG_4124

We left and it had got really cold. I say this but the coldest it was the entire time we were there was 14 degrees, so i’m kind of unsure how i can say it was cold when it was -4 at home! IMG_4128

The following morning we were going to get the Metro to the airport as it was a simple get on and wait 32 minutes and get off at the last stop. The Metro station was also a 6 minute walk from our hotel, so really easy and super close. There was problems on the track, luckily i got a notification on my phone at 1am. So we ended up getting a taxi.

Heres my, it’s 4am, how is it already home time face.

We got to the airport and headed straight for “breakfast”.

Everywhere we go we always make sure we have a Burger King or McDonalds, so Dan decided we were getting a Burger King at the airport. When we arrived he didn’t fancy it and neither did I.

This was until I saw a huge sign that said “SIN GLUTEN!”

Gluten free Burger King! This meant we were definately having Burger King for Breakfast now!

Check out my Gluten Free Burger, WITH BREAD all wrapped up like a normal burger. The bread was so soft and lovely too! I wish they did this in the UK.

We got on the plane 50 minutes late because we were delayed. Then the plane didn’t take off for another hour and a bit. We were supposed to land back at Birmingham at 8:50am and didn’t land until 12:30pm. We wouldn’t have minded if we were in the airport at this time, but we were literally stuck on the plane. It’s safe to say I was really happy to finally get off of the plane!

We collected the car, and headed home. We climbed into our Christmas PJ’s and watched way to much of a box set on sky Q and snuggled into bed.

I cannot wait for our next adventure, and our first adventure of 2018!

“Why Is A Raven Like A Writing Desk?”

So a couple of weeks ago we got bought two tickets to “Alice Underground” in The Vaults theatre in London.
So on Saturday 2nd Of September we drove to Rugby Station, jumped on a train and off we went!

I was really worried about Dan hating it cause he isn’t in to Alice (although he did buy the DVD for us on our first like movie date night which was cute!) but that was a while ago, so he doesn’t really need to do stuff like that for brownie points anymore.

First off, we didn’t think we we’re going to make the train so we went to McDonalds and had breakfast. McDonalds is one of those places where i always feel like they should be doing SO much more gluten free stuff by now as they’re so big. But no, heres my bacon and egg Mcmuffin, without the muffin..

When we finished, we went to park and eventually after a few different car parks we found a space (in the original one we were supposed to go in..) and then walked to the station. I say walk, Dan made us run, and we some how got the original train we were supposed to be getting, still now i have no idea how Dan didn’t run straight out the other side or trip over taking 3 steps at a time whilst my little legs didn’t keep up as well..

We got to London (please keep in mind the only place i’ve ever been on trains is in Paris and there is fine, easy i can handle it, but in the UK, i paid for a car, i’m using my car.. so trains aren’t a thing for me) and it was pretty drama free!

We’re never early for ANYTHING cause “WE” have the worlds worst time keeping. Yet somehow we were nearly 2 and a bit hours early. So we went to see Big ben, The London Eye, Had some Slush drinks and i was of course asking for selfies every 5 minutes..IMG_5114

We walked the longest way you could thing, but eventually found the Vaults and the graffiti tunnel. I think the tunnel itself is AMAZING! Dan disagrees cause he doesn’t see the point in graffiti and says it isn’t art.. but i do, so i took more pictures (shock) and send a load to Sam, who does loads of graffiti (legally) around Leicester.

We eventually got the the front door of The Vaults theatre itself. Had our bag searched and as soon as you go in, it’s as if you’re in another world. We clocked in with our tickets, got a stamp and had a look around until out show was called at 2:15pm. IMG_5120

There was SO much to look at and EVERYTHING was Alice themed. Nothing was missed they’d done everything and yet more than you could think or dream of to bring it to life.IMG_5121

They had loads of different cocktails too. They were again all alice themed. The bar guy was so lovely and went through every cocktail to find out what was Gluten Free and what wasn’t to help us and then was more than happy to change a few bits around so if it wasn’t originally Gluten free, he could make it so it was. I love when people do this so you don’t feel like you’re not included or like you have to miss out. IMG_5123

I’m gonna pretend he’s looking at me a smiling, but i think it was either Forest had scored or something amusing in one of his group chats. He looks cute though, so i’ll leave this photo here. IMG_5124

Behind Dan on the photo above, was a photo booth with an iPad, It had boomerangs and stuff so you could take pictures with the alice boarders and that. After 6 attempts we got two, but the other one i’m grabbing his face, so i’ll post this one instead! IMG_5132

There was no phones allowed inside, so we couldn’t take any other pictures which was sad, but also good cause it added to the experience. The show Alice Underground itself is incredible.

You’re first sent into a room, which itself is amazing. You walk through a secret passage way, and you chose eat or drink. We chose drink, so you drink and walk through a tiny door, as you’ve shrunk, and the people that choose eat go through a huge door, cause they’ve grown.

Then you’re given a playing card “All subjects are to be issued with a ‘Sanctioned Ultra-sensible identification ticket’ or a ‘SUIT’ for short. Your journey through Wonderland is guided by a charismatic playing card!”

I was the 2 of clubs – and i was also the luckiest person on the entire tour. I kept being pulled out for stuff, and taken into little rooms that no one else would get to see. I had to take tart kits and flour to the chef, i had to carry mouse milk around (it’s vary rare you know, do you know how hard it is to milk a mouse?). After crawling and running around with just one other playing card (one of the cast) i was taken back into the room with everyone else. Me and Dan then got spilt up as he was a spade! I started panicking but it was actually kinda fun and made it even better.

He had his tour, and i had mine, we had moles humping my feet, they’d only go away with mouse milk. We had to help paint the roses red, and so so SO much  more. The entire thing is incredible.

Me and Dan eventually met up again around half way round the show. We met up after seeing the twins and sat with the caterpillar. Dan got to eat the tarts but i got given a whistle to call the Jabberwocky.

We then went and got our tea, and sat ready for the mad hatters tea party. This itself, theres no words to describe it. Ive never been to anything like it in my entire 26 years of life.. Of course though, we all had to move seats, which means i was on the tall chair dancing with the cast and everyone was singing the Happy un-birthday song to me! (Honestly, i did more than anyone on this tour!)

After that there was a few other bits and the grand finale, which i won’t give away!

If you have the chance to go, then GO! I couldn’t recommend it more and we’re so lucky we got the tickets as a gift else i don’t think we would have gone at all!

We headed out, went to the station, and started our journey back to Rugby.

Dan, of course loves a nap so fell asleep on the train.. IMG_5145

Then woke up with my handbag printed on the side of his face, which i found really funny so heres a picture of that.. IMG_5149

We we’re going to eat in London but as it was a Saturday night decided not to. We ended up at Nandos in Rugby and ordered WAY too much food. IMG_5151

We some how ate it all though (after counting chips out to each other because we were just TOO full).

Theres less than 2 weeks left to see Alice Underground, so if you can get tickets, DO IT! It wont be here again, and i honestly couldn’t think of a better way to spend my Saturday. It was honestly Incredible.

To see more bits, Follow them on Instagram @AliceUnderLdn and Their website is http://www.alice-underground.com – the website itself will show you just half of how amazing it is.

Theres ALOT of walking around the show, you’re sat down for nothing, but this plus a mixture of climbing though bookcases, through forests, avoiding the Hearts, tarts and frogs – and yet making friends with the caterpillar is all worth it.

Safe to say after this we had a very very lazy Sunday as we both needed it! And on the odd chance we get to go back, we’ll just have to pick EAT!

Madrid Short Break

IMG_6610 (1)

So! Me and Dan went to Madrid last weekend… and spent 90% of our money on food.. We were there  Sunday – Wednesday and although i’ve been before, this time was SO much better.

We arrived and got sorted and in our room for around 8pm. So we got changed and went straight out to eat. It was the Real Madrid, Barcelona match the night we got there so although we ended up not watching it at the stadium, we went and found a bar just up from the apartment. We had loads of food, beer and sangria and the atmosphere was amazing! IMG_6492

We ordered Chocolate ice cream, well what we thought was chocolate ice cream, but it was actually difference ice creams dipped in different chocolate and then served individually. They were so nice!IMG_6495

I wore my New Look denim jacket and a cute little 2 piece outfit. It’s like shorts and a sling back top. I ordered an 8 and the top was way to big, but the shorts fitted okay! They’re both really thin, so pretty perfect for Holiday! They’re from BooHoo.

There was a mirror on the entrance / exit of the apartment and it lit up at night. Perfect selfie location..

The first day we were there we went to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, which is basically a big football stadium.. Dan was in his element, I was walking around trying to find good light for selfies, and taking far too many photos.

I even found a mirror in the changing rooms and made Dan selfie with me.. IMG_6578

Okay so after the football day (which felt like it lasted a good 3 weeks, but it was his trip for his present so I’m not negative..) i found makeup shops! I went a little OTT, but i fully stand by the fact i needed everything i bought… kinda. The picture below is only from one shop.. we went to about 7.IMG_6581

I wore a sling back top, so needed a stick on bra the second day we were there. Dan got really confused and couldn’t work out what it actually was or what it was for. As its reusable, I put it back in its packaging and 20 minutes later Dan walks in wearing it looking pretty chuffed with himself..

The last day was pretty cold (for me, but I’m a wuss) so i ended up wearing jeans and a denim jacket all day. It was kinda awkward because everyone else was wearing shorts and t-shirts.. IMG_6600

Where we were staying, the apartment was on a really busy hughstreet. So we had loads of food places around us. We went to “VIPS” for lunch on the last day cause the menu had loads of gluten free stuff. We ordered gluten free nachos, The nachos themselves were nice. Dan loved the sauce thing, but it was way to weird for me. It had melted cheese sauce, salsa, avocado, sour cream, chorizo and chicken… ALL MIXED UP INTO A HOT SAUCE. Nope.. I can’t deal with that.

I had a VIP’s Club Sandwich for lunch after the nachos were a massive fail. It was SO nice and really odd to be able to order a sandwich gluten free without people looking at you weird. IMG_6603

We went on a bus tour around Madrid to see everything. It was supposed to be Hop on, Hop off. It’s open for like 14 hours a day too. Theres two different routes, ones like old Madrid and ones classed as New Madrid. We only got off the bus once to swap routes.. we’d over eaten at lunch and I was hungover from sangria.. IMG_6609 (1)IMG_6610 (1)

As we got off the bus we found the KIKO Shop. KIKO Milano is an Italian Makeup & cosmetics range and has been around since 1997. Theres one in London and Birmingham but there isn’t one in Leicester. This kinda sucks cause everything in theres SO cheap for what it is and the products last ages! IMG_6615

Then I found my home.. NYX. I LOVE NYX Make-up & Products. Everything is full of pigment, lasts ages and nothing dries your skin out or makes you break out. Most of my eyeshadows are NYX and i couldn’t recommend them more. They have stalls in Leicester. Boots in fosse park has a really big stall with about 8/9 different stands. IMG_6616

Bubble Tea! Dan hates it, I love it. They have a stand at Uni, but i managed to grab one with Mango juice, then Apple and lychee popping pearls and Mixed jellies. IMG_6617

On our last night we said we were only going to order a few bits and just snack. Turns out it ended up not being a few bits. We had A plate of different meats and cheese. A salad with literally everything on and some Patatas Bravas (spicy potatoes). It was all SO nice though.. IMG_6637

Standard “flying so i’m gonna take a photo of clouds” photo.. IMG_6655

I had the most amazing time exploring Madrid properly this time and literally can’t wait to go back. We managed to get our standard flights for just over £100 for both of us and the apartment was only £126 for 4 people. We upgraded and stuff so it cost a little more. But it’s really easy to go to Madrid for cheap!
